Not inaccurate – but the north-west is equally characterised by its tidal zones, where things are constantly changing in an ever-present that hovers between land and ocean – where the future advances almost unseen. And if you’re out there, and you don’t notice the tide turn, you might be in serious trouble.

A section of rectangular floor-space is studded with low swivel stools. On each stool sits an audience member, expectant, watchful. There is no centre, only parallel lines, an implied warp and weft. Overhead is the grand vaulted ceiling of the New York Public Library. When the dancers appear, everyone swivels spontaneously in the direction of their movements, adjusting their point of view to the action.

Just like the detritus of 20th-century culture – the high heel, the BMX bike, the baseball bat – the skeleton is an artefact; an object both loaded with unique memories and generic, just like all the others. But in the hands of choreographer/performer Larissa McGowan, the skeleton is anything but lifeless – it flexes, crashes and impacts, embarking on fierce kinetic adventures with others like it.

The third biannual Dance Massive initiative is set to launch across Melbourne from Tuesday March 12, led by a consortium including Arts House, Dancehouse and the Malthouse Theatre. Supported by the Australian Council for the Arts and Arts Victoria, Dance Massive 2013 features a large number of artists presenting distinctive contemporary dance works around Melbourne. One of them is Action/Response, led by curator Hannah Mathews.
